1–1 against Växjö: "That point could prove to be important"

Malmö IP provided a sunny Saturday afternoon. Those of us who took our seats in the stands hoped the home side would repeat their victory from their previous home match against Vittsjö.

A win and three points would mean a significant step away from the relegation zone.

As I mentioned in my last post, Växjö arrived in Malmö with a clear objective: to secure points and keep their fight for a spot in the 2027 Damallsvenskan alive.

Personally, I was optimistic. When asked for a score prediction, I guessed 2–1 to Rosengård—fully aware that both teams had struggled significantly with scoring goals all year.

My optimism grew when, just ten minutes in, the Växjö goalkeeper wandered out into her own penalty area. This gave Bryleeh Henry the chance to score the opening goal with a very elegant lob.

Many of us were likely thinking the same thing: now the home team’s confidence could grow. Now they might feel free to play their game and showcase the quality that actually exists within the squad.

However, Växjö is a team with great resilience, and they showed no intention of backing down. They fought their way into the match and created several high-quality scoring opportunities.

It wasn’t until the 88th minute that Växjö finally managed to get the better of Moa Edrud in the Rosengård goal. Furthermore, in the final seconds, the visitors had a massive chance to take all three points back to Småland.

The truth is, Rosengård walked away with a point thanks to an outstanding performance by Moa Edrud in goal. But that point could prove important when the referee blows the final whistle on the last match of the season, as Rosengård faces BP in the concluding round.

I suspect many people, just like me, are wondering why Rosengård surrendered the initiative in the match after easily taking a 1–0 lead.

I wish I had a good answer, but there are no simple solutions heading into the final two matches.

The match against Hammarby this Saturday will be tough. Last year’s encounter at Malmö IP ended in a 1–1 draw.

We must continue to support the team and believe that the players can tap into the quality they truly possess. If they do, I believe there is a good chance of picking up points as early as Saturday—even though Hammarby is, of course, the heavy favorite.

This is hopefully the final home match of the season, and I truly hope you will make your way to Malmö IP to support the team and help the players deliver a great performance against the side from Södermalm.

See you at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
