After a prolonged period of knee issues, Amanda West is forced to take a break from football. Consequently, her loan agreement with FC Rosengård is also coming to an end.
Amanda West joined FC Rosengård on loan from Houston Dash, hoping to make a full return to football after suffering several knee injuries over the years. Despite a long period of rehabilitation and managed training loads, the knee problems have persisted.
Acting on medical advice, Amanda has therefore made the difficult decision to take a break from football for the time being.
"After suffering several knee injuries over the years, I wanted to make a comeback this season with FC Rosengård. Unfortunately, I didn't recover as well as I had hoped and have continued to experience pain. After months of rehabilitation and attempts to adjust my training load, I was told that professional football is no longer a viable option given the condition of my knee," says Amanda West.
What the future holds is currently unclear. Amanda does not want to close the door on a return to football.
"I’ve needed to step away from football. I don’t know if there’s a future where I can play again, but I’ll keep hoping."
Her time at FC Rosengård did not turn out quite as she had hoped on the pitch, yet she speaks of her time at the club with great warmth.
"It has been incredibly hard saying goodbye to my teammates and the staff at Rosengård; they are truly wonderful people who have become like family to me. Even though I couldn't play much or make the impact on the pitch I had hoped for, I am very happy I came to Rosengård. Even if I had known how it would end for me, I would have done it all over again."
Sometimes, it’s a small world. During her first NWSL season with the Houston Dash, Amanda was coached by Fran Alonso — the very same Fran Alonso who has recently joined FC Rosengård. While there was no reunion this time around, Amanda has a clear idea of what to expect from the team's new head coach.
"FC Rosengård supporters can expect to see Fran implement an attacking style of play. He is truly passionate about the sport, his players, and his team. It shows every day — both in training and during matches," Amanda concludes.
